Hallie Hart

creator/editor

I’m Hallie Hart, and I graduated from Oklahoma State University in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in sports media. I fostered my love for sports writing during my four years at OSU’s student newspaper, The O’Colly, which provided me with opportunities to work as a beat reporter, hold various editorial positions and appear as a regular guest on a local radio show. I also interned at The Oklahoman and Stillwater News Press, and I have contributed to Tulsa World, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, Golf Oklahoma and POSSE Magazine.

Although my post-graduation summer internship was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had no doubt I wanted to continue to pursue my passions of reporting and sharing feature stories. That was when I created the concept that became Scrap the Playbook. (I owe a big thank-you to the most supportive woman in my life, my mom, for helping me create the name and for patiently listening to all of my ramblings about ideas for this website.)

I founded Scrap the Playbook not only because I love storytelling, but also because I believe in women empowering women.

During most of my time at The O’Colly, I was the only woman in the sports department. When I attended OSU’s Sports Media Camp the summer before I started college, I was the lone female camper. Although newsrooms and press boxes are often male-dominated settings, I treasure the bonds I have built with many women in the sports media industry. Because of OSU’s sports media program, Association for Women in Sports Media meetings, summer internships and even conversations on Twitter, I have connected with female mentors and friends who strengthen and inspire me. I dedicate Scrap the Playbook to those women who are committed to achieving their professional goals and encouraging others to do the same.

To be an effective writer and speaker, I believe I should always be a reader and listener, so please feel free to email me at hallie.hart@okstate.edu or follow me on Twitter @halliehart if you have story ideas or questions. Thank you for visiting Scrap the Playbook.

I am Kennedi Landry. I’m born and raised in New Orleans, La. but have lived in Baton Rouge for the last four years. I graduated from LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication just this past May 2020 and recently started a job as a Reporter-Producer with MLB.com.

I got my first journalism experience during my freshman year at LSU and I never looked back. I’ve spent the last four years covering football, baseball and several other university sports teams for the student paper and Baton Rouge Advocate. I dedicated a lot of my time to covering women's sports at LSU, especially gymnastics, softball and women's basketball, all of which have phenomenal programs in the SEC and across the country. One of my favorite stories during my time at LSU was called "Wonder Women: LSU women coaches lead, pave way for future generations," which detailed the journeys of LSU's gymnastics, women's basketball, volleyball and softball coaches to creating successful programs in a football-dominated college town.

As a former athlete — only to the high school level though — I have always been dedicated to promoting women in sports and sports media. Joining the Scrap the Playbook team as a contributor was the perfect way for me to continue telling stories about women in sports.

I was once referred to as “the young female reporter” on the Michigan football beat, which just about sums up what it’s like to be a woman in sports in 2020. A senior at the University of Michigan, I cover Michigan football and help coordinate the sports section’s social media for the Michigan Daily. I first fell in love with sports journalism while covering Michigan field hockey’s Final Four run in 2017, and I haven’t forgotten my roots. Though football is my main beat, I’ve covered just about every sport at the school and helped lead an initiative for women’s history month highlighting female athletes and coaches at the university.

In 2020, I was an Association for Women in Sports Media scholar. Through the program, I was able to intern at USA TODAY’s sports desk, where I focused on college and Olympic sports. Before that, I interned at the Cape Cod Times, where I covered the Cape Cod Baseball League. While on the Cape, I wrote a feature about several of the women who play integral roles in the league.

Advancing women in sports has always been my passion, and I came to Scrap the Playbook because there are so many women in this field whose stories deserve to be told.
